Which Cities Will We Add Next?

Posted on Wednesday 28 June 2006

The majority of comments we received over the past few weeks sounded very similar to this one: “The site is easy to use. The fare prediction is cool and helpful, but I can’t use it until you add my airport.” So, as you can imagine, adding origination airports is at the top of our list!

How are we deciding which cities to add? Well, primarily we look at three data points:

  1. user requests from the Add My City link (located in the Farecast.com header)
  2. comments received from private beta users
  3. site metrics.

Which are the top 5 cities we plan to add next? Based on current feedback and data, the top five cities after Seattle and Boston would be New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Atlanta. But, there is still time remaining before we decide. So if you want to see us add your city, please submit a request on the Add My City link.

How did we choose Boston and Seattle as our first origination airports? We get asked this question all the time. Basically, both Seattle and Boston have a higher percentage of online travel shoppers per capita and strong competition with multiple airlines participating in these markets. And, of course, being based in Seattle helped.

Well that’s it. Let me know if you have any other questions on the topic, and thanks for stopping by.

The idea is very impressive, and looks to be incredibly interesting. As you add cities, are you going to be adding even the smaller airports in those cities? The specific examples I’m thinking of are Akron (outside of Cleveland) and Burbank (Los Angeles), but I’m sure there are plenty more.

    Best of luck.

Hey Ezzie, yes, we are considering smaller, “child” airports near-by major hubs (or “parent” airports). We realize it will make searching easier and more efficient to include them in our results over time. If you have a specific airport you would like us to add, please visit the Add My City link on the home page. Thanks for stopping by.

[...] We will add the ability search nearby airports and add more cities in the very near future. See an earlier post that describes our process for selecting new airports. We will also consider adding international flights, but this may take a while. [...]

Much ado about very little. The idea sounded interesting but its so limited that I’d be ashamed to call it a launch. I’ll check back in a year or so when it might actually be useful.

Why, Do we have a farecast which id for the next seven days only, why can’t we expand the period of time over a month or 3 months etc.
I think the kind of people who are looking at farecast to get a good deal, are not the ones who would travel over the next week, but I guess are more long term travel planners.

    Thanks.

How about adding European cities? I think that the largest spread between low and high priced fares occurs with US-Europe travel. If you can give us a hand with these fares we would all appreciate it!

Hello, I see the most comments here address my wishes also, of more airports. I wish some airports in the center of the country could be added……it is so expensive to fly from ONT (CA.) to FSD (South Dakota) or OMH (Omaha NB) I would love it if you would add these airports. ONT is a great airport, in the Inland Empire (So. Ca), wonderful alternative to LAX.PLEASE consider adding these airports. Thanks, and Best Luck

Please add international cities as soon as possible. Those fares can vary hundreds of dollars. The major european cities as well as the major cites of the orient. Thanks.

How about adding a link to a list of the airports in use by the site? Currently it’s trial and error to see if an airport is “green”. It would be a lot more useful if I could just look at a list of which airports I can get the predictions for so that I know if the site will be useful for me. Eventually I can see using this site on a regular basis!

Thank you for trying your best and listening to your users when we make requests for airports or ideas, I think users need to remember that this is still beta, so not every airport will be here. but this site has helped me a lot. I like your easy to use site, and helpful extra info. keep growing and standing up for the little guys.

I think the posters are far too kind to you on this subject. You are, unfortunately, just another site getting good press for limited features or value. (Think: Prosper Lending.) The simple fact is: you boost your technical capability in places like the NY Times, but then don’t execute. We live in a global village — it’s time to improve international city forecasting. Better get on it!

I add my vote for international travel - the fares are outrageous at the moment and we need all the help we can get.

Why was Charleston, SC added as a city & then later removed?

Most of us business travelers are interested in farecasting to International airports. Do you expect to add those major cities soon?

This is a wonderful tool for travelers–I’ve suggested a few major Canadian cities to be added as all of the major US airlines enter Canada on a daily basis and Canadians love to travel in the US, especially with the current exchange rates!
