While we like to fly places to go on vacation or visit family and friends, have you ever pondered how many planes are in the sky at a given moment? What does the FAA see when they look at the sky?

Aaron Koblin, a member of the Department of Design|Media Arts at UCLA, and his team have created some amazing video files from FAA data. What are all those little dots and white blurs? Those are planes en route to/from U.S. airports.

U.S. Flight Patterns from the website of Aaron Koblin

The collection of video files can be found here, but if you’d like to see one overview of all the files, check out the Overview Documentation file.

If you’ve got QuickTime installed, take a moment to check out these videos. Aaron Koblin and his team have done an amazing job of giving us a glimpse into what flies above.
