The Super Bowl’s Impact on Airfare Prices

It is NFL Conference Championship Weekend! This means I will be spending a good seven hours in front of the TV this Sunday.

You might be wondering why post about the NFL playoffs on a blog about Farecast, the first and only airfare prediction site. The reason is to understand if the Super Bowl, specifically the teams playing in the Super Bowl impact the price of airline tickets.

I ran searches on Farecast.com for flights from New Orleans, Boston, Indianapolis, and Chicago to Miami for 2/2 (Friday) to 2/5 (Monday). The Super Bowl will be played on 2/4, but I figured if I’m going to the Super Bowl, I might as well a weekend out of it.

Here are the lowest airfares available to Miami on 2/2 to 2/5 (pulled on 1/19 at 5:43pm):

New Orleans (MSY): $432
Boston (BOS): $430
Indianapolis (IND): $414
Chicago (ORD): $381

On Tuesday, I’ll post the price changes for each market. It will be interesting to see if the Super Bowl does have an impact on airline ticket prices.

I’m picking Saints and the Pats in the Super Bowl after this weekend.

I’d like to get your comments on who think will win this weekend, and you guesses in terms of where airfares will end up for all teams by this Tuesday.

I hope you are better at predicting fares than superbowl competitors. Two strikes. lol
