Long layovers are never fun. But every airport has its hidden pleasures, if you know where to look. Make the most of the time you’re grounded, with our guides to the ten busiest airports in the U.S. From NYC to LA, we’ve got the scoop on the best spots for sipping a cocktail, amusing the little ones, shopping ’till you drop, and more.

Starting off the countdown of the top 10 busiest airports this week is Detroit’s Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.

10. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport
McNamara Terminal, the largest of the three terminals here, has the most eating, drinking, and shopping options (post-security) and can be reached by free shuttle bus.

Best place to get a drink
Unwind with an elegant cocktail at the Grey Goose Martini Lounge (MacNamara Terminal); sip a margarita or sample premium tequilas at the Jose Cuervo Tequileria (Smith Terminal).

Best place to eat
Japanese cuisine at Musashi, Middle Eastern fare at Mediterranean Grill, and, for the kids, PB&J (they can choose from over a dozen gourmet versions of peanut-butter sandwiches).

Best place to amuse the kids
McNamara Terminal features four kids’ play areas, and everyone will love the 900-foot tunnel connecting Concourses B and C, which pulsates with an endless light and sound show.

Best shopping
Airport shopping in the Motor City includes the Henry Ford Museum Store, a Harley-Davidson store, and upscale gifts at Pangborn Design (all in the McNamara Terminal).

Best place to get online
Wi-fi is available all over the airport (for a fee); or head to the Online Café in the McNamara Terminal (Gate A36).

Best cheap way to escape the airport
From Smith Terminal, you can board a SMART bus to the city.

Best place to see something cool
Be mesmerized by dancing droplets of water at the cool black granite fountain in the center of the McNamara Terminal.

If you have any Detroit favorites, let us know.

I have to agree with the cool fountain in McNamara Terminal. I was walking from one of the terminal to my connecting flight on the other end (bad idea, the terminal is at least 10 miles long) and ended up watching this fountain for about 10 minutes.

In future editions of this… you should highlight the bars a bit more. I mean honestly… when you have a layover, you’re usually reading by by your gate or drinking/eating at the bar. Do any of the bars have cheaper drinks? (doubtful, unless the airport isn’t run by HMC (I think thats the company that runs a lot of the airport bars)). Do some of them have a better atmosphere than others? Are any aimed at 20-somethings? or are they all middle-of-the-road kind of places?

Also… anything within walking distance of the airport?
