Welcome to this week’s Farecast Fare View, an inside view into the news making headlines this week and the latest record low airfare deals.

In the News This Week

Southwest CEO cites declining travel demand The Associated Press reports that Southwest Airlines Co. said Wednesday there is “growing evidence” that a slowing U.S. economy is dampening travel demand, which will make it tough for the discount carrier to achieve its earnings target for the year. Mixed reports this week, as many carriers pointed to a weakening environment for passenger revenue in the United States, while others including Delta and Continental said passenger demand remained strong. They said airlines that have cut domestic capacity this year have been better able to match demand with supply than carriers that continue to grow. This makes for a confusing environment for the consumer going into the busy summer travel season and we at Farecast are tracking these fare increases/decreases daily in our pricing.

West Coast Fare Wars? Eyes are on California this week, with several carriers adding flights and competition into the market including JetBlue, Delta and Southwest. The Arizona Republic cites a recent Bloomberg Article that JetBlue Airways Corp. is considering a California expansion, as rival low-fare carrier Southwest Airlines Co. returns to San Francisco and newcomer Virgin America Inc. plans to enter the market. All of this movement could indicate lower fares for West coast travelers with increased competition.
