Farecast Summer Travel Trend

We all know that summer travel tends to be expensive, but at some point those high summer fares have to come back down to normal levels. The weeks following the Fourth of July are typically marked by a series of big sales. If you’ve recently been looking at fares for late-Summer or early-Fall travel and have been put off by high prices, now is the time that you should be taking another look. Today we saw prices drops ranging from $20 to over $100 in a variety of markets, here are some of the highlights:

Seattle to Denver route: Alaska launched a major sale for departures after September 5th, dropping fares an average of $136. The new low fare is $199. We saw prices in this range during a brief sale about a month ago, and in early May. Though we have seen fares as low as $160 between Seattle and Denver, I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for prices to drop further. Frontier, American, Northwest and Delta have all matched Alaska for now.

Atlanta to Los Angeles route: Continental launched a sale effecting nearly all departure dates over the next three months. The new fare is $301, dropping prices $50 on average. In recent weeks, US Airways has been running deeper sales with fares closer to $200, so there is room for the price to drop even further. However, if you’re keen to lock in your travel plans, now might be a good time to buy.

Los Angeles to Orlando route: Delta started a sale dropping fares to a near rock-bottom $219, including those coveted weekend trips with Thursday/Friday departures and Sunday/Monday returns. Departure dates between August 15th and September 15th are affected. United and American have matched Delta’s fare.

The Los Angeles to Orlando sale mentioned above is part of a larger set of sale fares Delta is offering. Other cities on sale include:

  • Dallas and Atlanta route: Prices have dropped an average of $50
  • Boston and Washington DC route: Prices have dropped an average of $50
  • New York and Tampa route: Prices have dropped an average of $30
  • New York and Atlanta route: Prices have dropped an average of $44
  • Washington DC and Atlanta route: Prices have dropped an average of $47
  • Philadelphia and Atlanta route: Prices have dropped an average of $61
  • New York and Las Vegas route: Prices have dropped an average of $31
  • Newark and Atlanta route: Prices have dropped an average of $40
  • Atlanta and Boston route: Prices have dropped an average of $44
  • If your trip hasn’t dropped in price yet, set up a Farecast Alert; we’ll email you prices every day or once a week, or when the price falls below a level you specify. Just run a search and click “Track Fares” from the search results page.

[...] Posted on Wednesday 1 August 2007 By: John Rauser - Farecast Fareologist The Tuesday sales this week are a bit thin. Laguardia - Orlando dropped $20 for travel after September 1 in a flurry of price adjustments from Jet Blue, Delta and American. Los Angeles - Newark also fell as American lowered prices $20 for departures after September 5. Why so little action this week? Well, after last week’s sales, there is reason to believe that prices are nearing the bottom. [...]
